Blog Archive In Other News New Campus Plans, Scandals, and a Hefty Donation
Blog Archive In Other News⦠New Campus Plans, Scandals, and a Hefty Donation The business school world is constantly buzzing with change and innovation. Each week, in addition to our regular news posts, we briefly touch on a few notable stories from this dynamic field in one roundup. Here is what caught our eye this week: London Business School has received a gift of £4.3M (about $6.5M) from alumnus David Pyott, the school announced recently. Pyott, who received his MBA from the school in 1980, has built a notable career in pharmaceutical leadership and served as the CEO and chairman of pharmaceutical company Allergan from 1998 to its acquisition in 2015. This donation brings Pyottâs total contribution to the schoolâs fund-raising campaign to £5.3M (more than $8M). Pyottâs gift will create 15 new scholarships and help fund the reconstruction of a campus building. The recent abrupt resignation of Stanford Graduate School of Business (GSB) Dean Garth Saloner set into motion a relentless rumor mill concentrating on Salonerâs part in a discrimination lawsuit filed by a former GSB professor. The suit claims the dean, along with another GSB professor who is the plaintiffâs estranged wife and Salonerâs alleged lover, plotted to remove the professor from his position at the university. Confused? Catch up by reading Bloomberg Businessâs recent, lengthy article about the case. Harvard Business School is expanding its campus with the development of two new buildings: Klarman Hall and G2 Pavilion. The school filed campus plans for the projects earlier this month, and predicted that construction of Klarman Hallâ"which will feature three stories and a thousand-seat auditoriumâ"would conclude in August 2018. Plans for the G2 Pavilion are still being developed. The two facilities are intended to replace the current Burden Hall. Diversity is now more sought after in a business school classroom than perhaps ever before. Financial Times notes that such top-ranked programs as the MIT Sloan School of Management and the University of Virginia Darden School of Business are luring applicants from various backgrounds with such tactics as accepting the GRE instead of the GMAT and targeting members of the social entrepreneurship network Teach for All. Graduation Speech College Of Health Sciences - 997 Words
An intense passion overwhelms my body and mind when I find myself thinking of my graduation holding my college degree for a picture and thanking my professors. This vision empowers me to thrive in school and conquer any challenges that may hinder my path to success. However, I am cognizant that many students have envisioned the same goal, yet have fallen short in the attempt because the discipline of dealing with college life as well as keeping up with a regular life in society is overwhelming. Nevertheless, my distinction between other students is that I consider graduating from college as a duty in my life, for I have experienced enough sufferings due to the absence of the word college in my parentââ¬â¢s vocabulary. Adrienne Rich Twenty One Love Poem free essay sample
Adrienne was known to be one of the most widely read and influential poets of the second half of the 20th century, and was credited with bringing the oppression of women and lesbians to the forefront of poetic discourse. Richs poetics depends on a readers experience of her poetry. It is an event of cultural engagement in which the poems, resonating with and against each other, urges the reader to test various hermeneutic and ideological stances, and it requires the dialogic interaction among poet, poem, reader, and cultural context. For these reasons, the reader is indispensable to Richs feminist poetics. I believe the readers are the ones to perceive the personification in her poetry. Through his/her perception the images can be understood or retranslated into several different possibilities. Such freedom conceded to the reader can be interpreted as a demonstration of the personaââ¬â¢s disengagement from a given ideology. The publication of Twenty-One Love Poems in 1976 in effect marked Richs coming out as a lesbian. The rules break like a thermometer,/ quicksilver spills across the charted systems/ were out in a country that has no language/ whatever we do together is pure invention/ the maps they gave us were out of date/ by years , were all things she wrote that pronounced that she was coming out. In 1970 Rich separated from her husband, with whom she had three children. He was subsequently ruled to have killed himself. She was with her partner, the writer Michelle Cliff ,for more than 30 years. (http://www. guardian. co. uk/March292012) The Dream of a Common Language is a collection of poetry that was written by a woman, about women, for women. This book was the first book published after Rich decided to come out about her sexuality in 1976 and the book was first published in 1978. The Dream of a Common Language was poetry for community, poetry meant to exploit purpose, poetry meant to be marked up in the margins, poetry meant sung to someone of significance. The collection is divided into three sections. The first, ââ¬Å"Power,â⬠is about the accomplishments of individual women. The second portion of the book, ââ¬Å"Twenty-one Love Poems,â⬠is the open proclamation of Richââ¬â¢s sexual preference and Not Somewhere Else, but Here,â⬠where Adrienne Rich is believed to continue her exploration of female relationships. Twenty one love poem is a quatrain, with various stanzas of fourteen or sixteen lines. Its in a sonnet form which was originated in Europe. A sonnet is a signified poem of fourteen lines that follows a strict rhyme scheme and specific structure. Adrienne Rich is known for poetry about social and political commentarty, feminism, social commentary, etc. A collection of Love Poems should certainly be taken in context with lesbian sexuality. In her Twenty-One Love Poems, Adrienne Rich classifies a series of nature images in order to examine the relationship between self and city, self and lover. On all accounts this collection of poems, nature serves as a symbol of psychic life and shock, and it can be difficult to describe the various natural metaphors which Rich uses. One can, however, group these images into categories. To me, the poem is about choice, actions, and how we define love ourselves rather than through destiny, meeting of souls, etc. The poem has some classic existential themes; the opening line: no ones fated or doomed to love anyone says our choices in love are our own. It has an existential theme to it. Looking at the section beginning ââ¬Å"No one has imagined us,â⬠I didnââ¬â¢t identify the ââ¬Å"usâ⬠necessarily as female but more generally just as humanity struggling and that their the only one who notice how rough things are, which, incidentally, I think is more powerful left unnamed because it allows the reader to take on the poem for him or herself. Then I read ââ¬Å"live like trees,â⬠which i get the sense it means they want to live naturally, free from the patriarchal oppression, and be able to branch out, take up space in this city. The poet makes reference to the opera Tristand und Isolde (a story about lovers that do confuse death and love, due to a love potion) and makes a point to say that the opera is NOT the story that fate, magic, love potions, etc. , have nothing to do with it. The existential theme is continued when the poet mentions a tape recorder a device that can only record sound, what is actually said and done. In a sense, she is saying that actions are what are important thoughts and intentions are meaningless in death, what remains after we are gone is how we were are seen by others. If our actions define who we are or how we tried to love, the recorded may have caught some ghost of us that recordable actions are what will be remembered after death. She is saying that love is what we say and do, what we choose to act upon by ourselves despite the forces that rage within us and against. I think its also interesting that the poem is directed mainly toward women, not men (especially given the poets background and other poems about sexuality and lesbianism) None the less the poem signifies how homosexuality may have been viewed in the late 1970ââ¬â¢s and how homosexuals may have felt during this period, basically hiding in the shadows so they would not be judged. The increasing visibility of gay people generated a backlash during the 1970s. It is perhaps the most discussed anti-gay rights campaign of the decade. Poetry is used to offers a way of distinguishing our need, not for rejecting needs, or even for achieving them.

Health care issues Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Health care issues - Essay Example The Republicans, on one hand, advocate for tax incentives as a measure of expanding private insurance and preventing costs. They want every American family to be able to purchase insurance through such ââ¬Å"marginal incentivesâ⬠(Mooney). These differences have persisted since the administration of former Republican President George W. Bush. Federalismââ¬â¢s main role in the issue of health care is to provide unity amidst diversity. It is understandable that each federal government feels threatened by the health care reform law passed under Obamaââ¬â¢s administration. The lawââ¬â¢s provisions tend to intrude ââ¬Å"deeply into the internal affairs of the statesâ⬠and contradict the very essence of federalism (Moffit). In a federalist set-up, local government units (states) and the national government share governing powers. These states are also vested with constitutional sovereignty and can pass their own laws independent from each other and from Washington. Congress officersââ¬â¢ intrusion is no longer healthy to the federalism espoused by the US. They specify ââ¬Å"how states are to arrange health insurance markets within their borders,â⬠and determine the ââ¬Å"products that will be sold to their citizensâ⬠(Moffit). The state of California responded to the health care law by not complyi ng with the federal legislation. As a result, the federal government is passing two bills, calling for its compliance (Haberkorn). The state has not joined 14 other states in blocking the health care law, but is merely enjoying its power to ignore legislation. Governor Schwarzenegger had other priorities in mind, like cutting the health care budget of California and expanding oil drilling in Sta. Barbara (Wood). The governor also said he opted out of compliance and support for the programs because congress was buying votes to pass the health care law (Falcone). The US Constitution prevents the President, acting through

Some exam questions I need explained Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 1
Some exam questions I need explained - Essay Example PEST (Political, Economical, Socio-cultural, Technological factors) analysis is an important strategic planning tool. It proves to be a useful stepping stone for the analysis of external factors for an organization. It is also useful to analyze the feasibility of a certain project with reference to different external factors that might affect its execution. This model covers a broader aspect of the prevailing environmental factors than SWOT analysis. Porterââ¬â¢s 5 Forces: This model was developed by Michael E. Porter in 1980. He formulated the model on the basis of 5 competitive forces that tend to determine the nature of every industry. Organization can evaluate the level of competition, profitability and acceptance rate of an industry with the help of these forces; threat of new competitors, bargaining power of the suppliers, rate of rivalry in the industry, bargaining power of customers, threat of substitutes. Value Chain Analysis: It is considered to be a systematic approach; involves a sequence of functions and actions that build value for the organization. Value chain analysis plays a major role in the development of competitive advantage in the market. It equals to the cumulative value that is provided by the organization. Experience Curve Effect: This concept was formulated in 1966 by Bruce Henderson. Experience is considered to be an asset for any organization. The concept promotes the increment of this asset in different forms in the organization, for example, hiring of experienced resources, collaboration with other companies etc. According to the experience curve effect; if a company gains greater experience in a specific field or production process then 25 to 30 % of the costs can be decreased. Types of Parents and the Type of Parent I Am Essay -- parenthood, raisi
There are many types of parents in the world today. The types of parents could be classified in many different categories. I believe there are three types of parents today: the Consultants, the Helicopters, and the Drill Sergeants. In this essay, I will discuss and explain each of these types of parents. I will also discuss the type of parent I believe I am, and how my parenting style may affect my children in the future. The Consultant Parents is a loving and logical parent that provides guidance and consultant services for children. They provide messages of personal worth and strength and rarely mention responsibilities. The Consultant Parents demonstrates how to take care of self and be responsible. They share personal feelings about their own performance and responsibilities with their child. The Consultant Parents provides and helps their child explore alternatives and then allows the child to make his/her own decision. They provide the child with a ââ¬Å"time frameâ⬠to complete their responsibilities. The Consultant Parents often uses lots of actions and very few words. They allow their child to experience lifeââ¬â¢s natural consequences and allow them to serve as the teacher. The Helicopter Parents hovers over their children and rescues them from the hostile world in which they live. They provide the messages of weakness and low personal worth. The Helicopter Parents tends to make excuses for the child, but complains about the childââ¬â¢s mishandles responsibilities. They take on their childââ¬â¢s responsibilities and protect the child from any possible negative feelings. The Helicopter Parents will make decisions for the child and provides no structure, but complains to the child saying, ââ¬Å"After all Iââ¬â¢ve done for youâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ The Helicop... ...g or almost doing and their parents do not do things for them that satisfy their own needs rather than the needs of the child. Therefore, in conclusion, there may be many types and styles of parenting today, my classifications for parenting types are three categories: the Consultants, the Helicopters, and the Drill Sergeants. Each of these three parenting styles has their positive and negative aspects. I choose to incorporate a mixture of each style in the parenting and raising of my children. My style of parenting seems to be working very well thus far. I will have to continue in my parenting life and see how my parenting style will affect my children in their futures. Marketing Myopia Essay
Industries growth has stopped due to the failure of management the top executives, railroad business because they focus on sciences not on the customers. To keep growing industries must focus on customersââ¬â¢ needs and wants then solely on their products. Many companies are endangering their business due to improper defining of their purposes. DuPont, corning and aluminum industry flourished because they were customer oriented. Taking example of Dry cleaning; has reduced in a remarkable way and may sooner be diminished. Grocery stores have been replaced by super markets. There is nothing like a growth industry but there is an expansion that is because the companies organize themselves to create growth opportunities. Self-deceiving cycle has four conditions. 1. Growth is due to increase in population. 2. Believing that there will be no substituent for any major product. 3. Mass production and declining unit cost for output increase. 4. Preoccupation with a product. The belief that increasing customers will increase your business have a negative impact as you will yourself not bother to expand your business. The petroleum industry thinks that there is no competitor as there is no substitute of oil but many refineries have such huge stock of oil that they can be a threat. Firstly the crude oil was greatly demanded as kerosene was used for lamps until the bulb was invented and the heaters were started with coal burns. If the company would have been product oriented the business would be ended but they started refining the crude oil and made uses out of each product of crude oil. Oil has proved to be the strongest growth and millions of barrels is consumed daily. Production pressure to some companies such as advertisement and commercials are sometimes this much great that they try to get aid of it. But in all this we forget marketing and focus on the needs of seller and marketing fulfill the customer need. Industries now spend billions of rupees in consumer preference and fulfilling their ideas out of Chevroletââ¬â¢s 7000 dealers only 57 provide night maintenance service. Ford invented the assembly line and reduced the cost of production and sold millions of $500 cars. Survival needs a change. Consumer needs change and if a company does not provide it they lose. With the wider perspective the CEOs have to recheck on their vision and the selection of the proper targeted market. This was seems to be successful as the organization was able to find out some opportunities that were initially unseen. This is also helpful in predicting the future progress with the help of business prediction techniques that are currently available. To rise above the myopia one should have his main focus on the strategies and predictive techniques that are used to gain hold on the opportunities. And mainly focus on the customerââ¬â¢s lifetime value. This will maintain the long term profit objectives.

The Crucible - Theme of Revenge - 1414 Words
A dramatist who explores the theme of revenge throughout his play is Arthur Miller in ââ¬ËThe Crucible. There are different characters in this play that carry this theme of revenge, Abigail being one in particular, as she seeks revenge against Goody Proctor. This is due to Goody Proctor firing Abigail from her job after she had found out Abigail had had an affair with her husband. This seventeen-year-old girl also has an endless capacity for dissembling. John Proctor, Reverend Parris, and the Putnamââ¬â¢s are also characters in the play that are out to seek revenge for their own reasons. It could through the theme of revenge, be said that Miller tries to enhance your application of the play. Miller wrote the Crucible as a response toâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬Å"There is a fraction sworn to drive me from my pulpit. Do you understand?â⬠these words ââ¬Ëdo you understandââ¬â¢ give off the impression that Parris is trying to convince himself of this fact rather than explain it to Abigail. It also shows why Parris wants revenge, as it explains that some of the villagers literally do not like him. The individual on the other hand who Parris seeks his settling of scores with is John Proctor, as he does not respect Parris as a reverend. Parrisââ¬â¢s dislike towards Proctor clearly is empathised in act three, which is set in the courtroom. Made known by Parrisââ¬â¢s subtle comments about Proctor, such like ââ¬Å"Beware this man, your Excellency, this man is mischiefâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Heââ¬â¢s come to overthrow the court, your Honour.â⬠Both these comments convey the idea that Parris is strongly trying to get his thoughts about Proctor across. Th is proposal shows through the words ââ¬ËExcellencyââ¬â¢ and ââ¬ËHonourââ¬â¢ that Parris is trying to get the attention of Judge Hathorne as he directs theses comments straight to him. Parrisââ¬â¢s revenge towards Proctor is clear once he expresses that John is not a good Christian, as he does not attain church regularly. This observation, which Parris has made, is one of the main reasons to why Parris reacts to Proctor in the ways he does. This revenge is not as strong as Abigailââ¬â¢s and Proctorââ¬â¢s, although it isShow MoreRelatedThe parallels between The Crucible and the Rwanda Genocide Essay1110 Words à |à 5 PagesParallels between The Crucible and The Rwanda Genocide The themes of justice, community and sacrifice in The Crucible are universal and can be identified in many modern events in history, including the Rwanda Genocide.
